Dear You

by Kari Vazquez

Dear You,

Hey You. I love you. If no one has told you that lately, let me be the one. You don’t know me, and I don’t know you but that doesn’t mean I love you any less. I’m the sister you never had, the cousin, friend, mother, co-worker, teacher, or any other person in your life that hasn’t loved you for you. In the darkest times, you have me. In the happiest times you have me. Even though sometimes it feels like the world is filled with ugly, there’s others like me who wouldn’t think twice about loving you for you. Being LGBTQ does not mean you are less worthy of being loved. It doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be proud of yourself and if no one in your life is hyping you up to be proud of yourself, I got you. Being LGBTQ doesn’t make you less human, or less worthy. It doesn’t make you a sinner. It doesn’t make you ugly. It doesn’t mean you don't deserve to be a parent someday. It doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to get married someday. It DEFINITELY doesn’t mean you don’t deserve the same human rights as everyone else.

I wish, with all my being, that I didn’t have to tell you how wonderful you really are. I wish the world could see you the way I see you. That everyday you woke up and knew you were accepted by everyone around you for being you. Someday, I hope the world changes, but for now, I will radiate the love you deserve to all the “You’s” out there wishing they had a me. My hope is that my love, support, dedication, and voice will be what you need today. My hope is that you will find me when you need someone to love on you like a Momma is supposed to love on her babies. My hope is that I can give you the big sister talks about the things you can’t talk to anyone else about, so that you don’t have to feel alone. When you need a friend to go with you to a pride event, I’m there. Need someone to go shopping with? Let’s go. Someone to cook you dinner? Again, the Momma in me has got you boo!! Don’t ever feel like there isn’t someone willing to be the person you need. I’m right here and I won’t leave.

Please promise me, who loves you so much, that if you are ever struggling, and your thoughts get too dark, that you will get help. Promise me that you won’t do it alone, and you will reach out. 2nd Floor is an organization that can help but there are tons of others. Promise me you won’t give up because you have me, and I promise YOU that I won’t give up making this world a better place for you.

Happy Pride Month you amazing, wonderful, gorgeous, worthy, electrifying, brave, beautiful YOU!!!

Love Always,
